Liberty Square Riverboat & Rivers of America Now Permanently Closed to Make Way for ‘Cars’ at Magic Kingdom

Rivers of America Closure

The Liberty Square Riverboat, along with Tom Sawyer Island and the Rivers of America, has closed permanently at the Magic Kingdom.

Liberty Square Riverboat Final Journey

The Liberty Belle took one final journey around the Rivers of America around 8:42 p.m. on Sunday, July 6, 2025. It returned to the dock in Liberty Square around 8:59 p.m. and is now closed permanently.

The Riverboat joins Tom Sawyer Island as the latest addition to the list of retired attractions at Magic Kingdom. Tom Sawyer Island closed earlier on Sunday evening.

Guests who wanted to be part of the Liberty Belle’s final voyage were able to secure wristbands from Cast Members earlier in the day. The group gathered around 8:30 p.m. to board. WDWNT was among those onboard.

Rivers of America Closure Disney World

The Rivers of America was present (albeit not with the attractions as we know them today) when the Magic Kingdom opened in 1971. The Riverboat began operating in 1971 and Tom Sawyer Island opened in 1973. They will be replaced by the “Cars” themed area of Piston Peak National Park, which will host two attractions.

The closure was announced in August 2024following the reveal of the new “Cars” area at D23: The Ultimate Disney Fan Event.
