Live-Action Lilo & Stitch Becomes First Film of 2025 to Cross $1 Billion at Global Box Office

Disney has announced that the live-action reimagining of Lilo & Stitch has become the first Motion Picture Association (MPA) film of 2025 to cross the $1 billion mark at the global box office.

Live-Action Lilo & Stitch Crosses $1 Billion

A woman and child scream in the car as live-action Stitch sits between them in this Lilo & Stitch scene.

This marks Disney’s fourth feature film to cross that financial mark in the past 13 months. Other billion-dollar hits from Disney include Moana 2 from Walt Disney Animation Studios, Deadpool & Wolverine from Marvel Studios, and Inside Out 2 from Disney & Pixar.

We knew there was a lot of love for Lilo & Stitch with audiences around the world, yet we never take that for granted, and we’re proud of how this new film has connected with people.

I’m thankful to our filmmakers, our cast, and all on our Studio team who have made this film such a success, and we look forward to more adventures with these characters ahead.

Alan Bergman, co-chairman of Disney Entertainment

Lilo & Stitch opened domestically with $183 million over four days, setting a new record for the biggest Memorial Day weekend debut in film history. It’s also one of just two films this year to pass $400 million at the North American box office.

The success of the live-action reimagining has also brought new eyes to the original 2002 animated film. Viewership of it and related content on Disney+ has earned more than 640 million hours of streaming globally. A sequel to the live-action film is already in development.

Stitch is an example of what Disney actually does best. An extraordinary animated film from 2002 that becomes a series that then over time creates a real fanship, which leads to us looking at the idea of creating this wonderful film that we now are bringing out into the world.

David Greenbaum, president of Disney Live Action and 20th Century Studios

Despite its box office success, the live-action Lilo & Stitch, directed by Dean Fleischer Camp (Marcel the Shell With Shoes On), has seen some controversy due to major plot and character changes from the original — like removing Gantu to make Jumba an irredeemable villain and Pleakley no longer dressing in drag. Fleischer Camp even stated that “People do get left behind” when addressing criticism of the changed ending.
