Disney has added a plaque to the ground next to the “Cigar Store Indian” statue on Main Street, U.S.A. at Disneyland Park.

“Cigar Store Indian” Plaque

A bronze plaque on a brick sidewalk explains the history of a cigar store Indian carving.

The plaque is from the “New Century Historical Society,” a fictional preservation society referenced on other Main Street signage. It reads:

Carved wooden cigar store Indian sculptures were common in towns across the United States. Shops used emblems and icons like spinning barber poles to advertise their wares and services to the largely illiterate public. Now considered a form of folk art, this statue has stood on Main Street since its early days, advertising the tobacco shop once located here.

A bronze statue of Walt Disney stands on a brick sidewalk on Main Street, Disneyland, with shops in the background.

The tobacco shop was an opening-day gift shop at Disneyland and operated until 1990. It was then replaced by the sports shop Great American Pastimes. In 1999, it became 20th Century Music Company, originally selling CDs and videos, but is now mainly a pin shop.

The plaque was installed just in time for the 70th anniversary of Disneyland on July 17, 2025. Keep checking Disneyland News Today for our coverage of the celebration.
