A long-term Muppet performer has passed away.

Tony Basilicato is known for 1979’s “The Muppet Movie.” He died on June 25 at the age of 70. After his work with The Muppets, Basilicato focused his attention on writing children’s books. According to his obituary on Legacy.com,

Anthony (Tony) V. Basilicato passed away peacefully surrounded by family & close friends. He was affectionately known as the “Muppett Guy” from North Haven, Connecticut as a result of being well known for working on Jim Henson’s “Muppett Show” and also performing in the first “Muppett Movie”

Tony’s strongest creative force was his amazing ability to create original characters and stories which were funny, entertaining and always ended with a heartfelt message. He truly was a creative genius and will be greatly missed by all who knew him.

“The Muppet Movie” was released on June 22, 1979, and tells the origin story of many beloved Muppet characters as they look to find success and fame.
