The latest construction permit filed for Disney’s Hollywood Studios has the address of the Feature Animation building, likely related to The Magic of Disney Animation.

New Construction Permit for Feature Animation at Disney’s Hollywood Studios

A lively crowd, families, and children gather near an animation studio with a large sorcerer’s hat and Pluto mascot reimagining of Animation Courtyard at Disney's Hollywood Studios.

This new permit was filed today, August 5, in Orange County. The permit lists the address of 200 Showbiz Blvd., which is the street address of the Feature Animation building located behind what is currently Star Wars Launch Bay. Disney Parks Blog recently shared a rare look at the backstage building, where Lilo & Stitch (2001) was animated.

This is the second permit filed this week for the same area in Disney’s Hollywood Studios, following a permit for “Provide labor, material and/or electrical for construction” at 190 Showbiz Blvd. Even more permits were filed for the area in July, including two for the courtyard’s entrance archway and a popcorn kiosk. The archway will be demolished as part of the updates to Animation Courtyard.

This latest permit again lists “provide labor, material and/or electrical for construction” as the general description and has Buena Vista Construction Company as the contractor. This company usually handles smaller projects, so these permits may involve preparing the area ahead of the main project beginning.

The Magic of Disney Animation

The Magic of Disney Animation was an opening-day attraction at Disney’s Hollywood Studios, but for over 10 years, the venue has been the home of Star Wars Launch Bay. Disney recently announced that the building would be returning to its animation roots, with a reimagined space dubbed The Walt Disney Studios, inspired by Disney’s real studio spaces in Burbank, California.

Originally, The Magic of Disney Animation centered around a real film studio attached to Disney’s Hollywood Studios, which was where movies such as Lilo & Stitch were animated. This updated version of the experience will take inspiration from the Once Upon a Studio short film and be a “place where kids and kids at heart can laugh, draw, dream, and explore animated new experiences.”

The announcement included news that the building will have an indoor playground based on Mary Blair’s Alice in Wonderland concept art, as well as a Mickey’s Sorcerer Hat facade, just like the real Roy E. Disney Animation Building in Burbank.

The reimagining of Animation Courtyard will also involve the debut of a new Disney Jr. show sometime next year. The current Disney Jr. Play and Dance! will be ending its run on September 24, with Star Wars Launch Bay also closing on September 25.
