Kona Cafe Makes Huge Changes to Beloved Tonga Toast

Disney has made changes to the classic Tonga Toast from Kona Cafe at Disney’s Polynesian Village Resort.

Tonga Toast Changes

WDWNT visited Kona Cafe to try the new version of Tonga Toast, as well as the updated plant-based version.

According to our server, the changes were implemented last week. They did not change any of the breakfast dish’s ingredients, but rather the method of preparation in an effort to make the exterior less hard or crunchy. Here is the description of Tonga Toast:

Banana-stuffed Sourdough French Toast rolled in Cinnamon-Sugar, served with a Strawberry Compote, and with your choice of Ham, Spiced Ham, Bacon, or Sausage

The dish is $17.50.

The change in consistency is clear. The Tonga Toast is more bready or cakey than it was previously. The crunchy exterior tended to launch cinnamon sugar everywhere, which we didn’t like personally. The sourdough flavor is more prominent.

We like this better, but can imagine people who fell in love with the previous version of the dish and have been eating it for years won’t be happy.

As Chef Lorene explained on a recent Disney Eats social media post, Tonga Toast dates back to the opening of Disney’s Polynesian Village Resort in 1971. It was served at one of the resort’s original restaurants, Coral Isle Cafe. Because of its popularity, it was the only item carried over to the Kona Cafe menu. That said, Tonga Toast has changed dramatically from its original Coral Isle Cafe iteration.

Regarding the plant-based Tonga Toast, we think it’s considerably better than before. It’s wet and doughy, and it’s hard to tell where the filling begins and the bread ends.

Guests who enjoy the regular Tonga Toast may be disappointed by this change, but those who have never had Tonga Toast are probably going to love it.
