Two Magic Kingdom attractions are currently closed for a major overhaul, and now Disney has shared roughly when we can expect both of these rides back.
Big Thunder Mountain has been closed since January 6, 2025, for a lengthy refurbishment, and Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin has also been closed for its major overhaul to add new vehicles, blasters, targets, and more since August 2025.

According to the Disney, Big Thunder Mountain Railroad and Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin are reopening to guests in Spring 2026.
Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin
The major overhaul for Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin at Magic Kingdom was announced earlier this year. The attraction is closed as of August 4 and we now know that the attraction will reopen in the Spring of 2026.

Updates to the attraction will include a new scene featuring a new character, Buddy the support-bot; new ride vehicles inspired by Star Command with video monitors offering real-time scoring and “other exciting features;” new blasters with an always-on laser, new colors, and new light, sound, and haptics; and updated targets.

Big Thunder Mountain Railroad

Big Thunder Mountain Railroad received all-new track early during this refurbishment project.

Disney announced Big Thunder would get an updated opening scene with a transformation of the Rainbow Caverns. There are expected to be more new scenes and surprises, but they have not been announced just yet.
