In a video and detailed technical paper, the Disney Research Hub shared details of the technology that will bring the new Olaf animatronic to life in World of Frozen at Hong Kong Disneyland and Disneyland Paris.
Olaf Animatronic Technical Details
Disney Research Hub shared a link to the paper as well as a video detailing how the animatronic figure works on their YouTube channel:
Animated characters often move in non-physical ways and have proportions that are far from a typical walking robot. This provides an ideal platform for innovation in both mechanical design and stylized motion control. In this video, we bring Olaf to life in the physical world, relying on reinforcement learning guided by animation references for control.
Titled Olaf: Bringing an Animated Character to Life in the Physical World, the paper details the challenges presented by Olaf’s squat body shape and unusual walking gait when it came to faithfully recreating him in free-roaming robotic form.

They break down the approach they took to the animatronic’s design under the snowman shell, outlining the points of articulation that allow it to most accurately mimic the character’s onscreen movements.

Ensuring the roaming robot’s walk looked natural and not mechanical was a key focus for the team, as well as ensuring Olaf’s footsteps weren’t too forceful or loud. They show examples of the different walks they programmed compared to animation references.

The Imagineers used detailed animation reference models throughout the process to ensure Olaf’s personality comes through via his eyes, mouth, arms, and body movements. Notably, his stick arms, carrot nose, and coal buttons are all magnetic and can be detached and reattached to allow for unique guest interactions.

Additionally, the paper and video explain the learning model they applied to the animatronic to teach it to navigate crowds and avoid collisions, as well as the thermal technology that also drives its interactions.
