Doctor Who director Peter Hoar said that “something went wrong” when the show was co-produced by Disney.
In an interview with Deadline about his new production company, Multitude Productions, Hoar said of Doctor Who, “I don’t think anybody would doubt the skills at the front line of that show but something went wrong. I think there were lots of areas you could point fingers at but ultimately it wasn’t a better show with more money. And that’s a good thing, because we haven’t got the money anymore, nobody has.”
Disney funded Doctor Who seasons 14 and 15, and they streamed on Disney+. The partnership ended last year. Though critic reviews were mostly positive, the seasons received mixed reactions from fans and the show saw a drop in ratings.
Hoar directed two season 15 episodes, “The Robot Revolution” and “Lucky Day.” He previously directed season 6’s “A Good Man Goes to War.”
Matthew Bouch, another Multitude Productions co-founder, added, “We’re driven by our passions but also seeing that there is a gap in the market in the UK – particularly with the well-publicized dropping off of Doctor Who – for genre-based British IP.”
Along with producer Jason Haigh-Ellery, Hoar and Bouch are creating a reboot of 1978 Bitish sci-fi show Blake’s 7.
Disney+ will still stream Doctor Who spin-off, The War Between the Land and the Sea, which they co-produced before ending the partnership. The spin-off premiered on BBC One in December and will come to Disney+ this year.
Doctor Who will return with a Christmas special written by showrunner Russell T. Davies this year.
