Fire Safety Permit Filed for Monstropolis Restaurant in Disney’s Hollywood Studios

The retheme of Mama Melrose’s into Harryhausen’s continues with a new permit filing related to fire safety equipment installation.

Fire Sprinkler Permit Filed for Mama Melrose Retheme

Demolition of Muppets Courtyard in Disney's Hollywood Studios is seen behind construction walls with concept art for the new Monstropolis land taking its place.

The permit, filed in Orange County on January 30, contracts Grunau Fire Protection to replace around 276 “pendents” throughout the building, specifically with “concealed pendents.”

A pendent is a style of fire sprinkler installed in the ceiling and sprays water downward in a domed or conical pattern. A concealed pendent is, as the name implies, hidden behind a decorative element.

Though construction is well underway in Grand Avenue to transform Muppets Courtyard into Monstropolis, this is only the second permit filed for the former Mama Melrose’s. The first was for “general construction” back in October 2025. According to concept art, it will be turned into Harryhausen’s, the restaurant where Mike Wazowski and Celia go on a date in the first Monsters, Inc. film.

Mama Melrose’s Ristorante Italiano first opened at Disney’s Hollywood Studios on September 26, 1991, though the park was still called Disney-MGM Studios at the time. Check out our last look inside Mama Melrose’s before it closed in May 2025.
