Page-Turning Times
During the Industrial Revolution, books began flying off the shelves like never before, thanks to the novel invention of the printing press. Suddenly, manufacturing books—which once required writing each and ever letter by hand—was as easy as ABC!
Fiction, Fables, & Fairytales Flourish
By 1901, nearly all Victorians could read and write, with little ones devouring children’s literature in the schoolhouse and at home. Many of these enchanting stories, with their imaginative plots and whimsical illustrations, have served as inspiration for Disney films and attractions, and they continue to captivate curious readers to this day.

Masterpieces for the Masses
Art That Pops!
Who says art must be painted on canvas or sculpted from stone? It can be silkscreen printed, etched, or even woodcut for a colorful, modern effect. When Pop Art emerged in the 1950s, it challenged the idea of what art should be and opened people’s minds to what art could be!
Famous Faces and Everyday Images
Inspired by popular culture, artists used elements of comic book design, like Ben-Day dots, to create accessible art pieces with subjects everyone could recognize. Featuring famous celebrities and everyday household items, colorful Pop Art creations showcased elements of real life for the enjoyment of everyone.

A Transatlantic Tradition
Crafts from the Heart
When you think of arts and crafts, you might imagine finger painting or macaroni art! But long before glue sticks and glitter hit the market, an art movement of the same name revolutionized the world of design.
From Industrial to Intricate
In late nineteenth-century England, there was growing frustration about the dull, lifeless, factory-esque design trends that the industrial revolution had inspired. In response, artists began creating fabric, furniture, and stained glass that was so detailed and exquisite it could not be easily replicated by machines. The Arts and Crafts movement was born, and soon this decorative style became as popular in America and Japan as it was in the United Kingdom.
