The upcoming Disney+ adaptation of Eragon, the fantasy novel that begins Christopher Paolini’s bestselling Inheritance Cycle series, has been in development since at least 2022 when initial reports confirmed Paolini was attached as a co-writer.

Development on the series has now taken a more definitive creative step forward with new leadership at the helm.

As of this month, Deadline reports, Todd Harthan and Todd Helbing have been brought onboard as co-showrunners of the series. Harthan, whose previous work includes High Potential, is also credited as a co-creator alongside Paolini. Helbing, known for Superman & Lois, joins to co-run and executive produce the adaptation.

Alongside the showrunner appointments, filmmaker Marc Webb has came on board as an executive producer, adding further experience to the creative team. A writers’ room opened in late 2025 to begin scripting the series, marking one of the first major milestones since the project’s early stages. Casting confirmations and a release timeframe have not yet been disclosed.

The Eragon adaptation is rooted in Paolini’s fantasy world of Alagaësia, in which a young farm boy discovers a dragon egg and becomes the first Dragon Rider in centuries, setting him on a path to master magic and challenge a tyrannical king. The book series has sold over 40 million copies worldwide. Disney+ aims to translate the narrative into a serialized format.

A previous film adaptation in 2006, produced by Fox 2000 Pictures and distributed by 20th Century Fox, was critically panned so any planned sequels were canceled. The only successful aspect of the original film was its single, Avril Lavigne’s “Keep Holding On,” which was short-listed in the Best Original Song category at the 79th Academy Awards.
