Hawaiian Language Versions of ‘Moana’ and ‘Moana 2’ Now Streaming on Disney+

In honor of Hawaiian Language Month, Moana and Moana 2 dubbed in the critically endangered language of ʻŌlelo Hawaiʻi are now streaming on Disney+.

ʻŌlelo Hawaiʻi Versions of Moana, Moana 2

Auliʻi Cravalho, the voice of Moana in both English and Hawaiian, announced the news on Instagram, writing, “It’s been an incredible privilege re-recording these films in ʻŌlelo Hawaiʻi; especially so, knowing Hawaiian is an endangered language.” Cravalho said that hearing the film in Hawaiian “hits different.”

Cravalho produced the Hawaiian language dubs with Ty Sanga and Lāiana Kanoa-Wong of Kūmau Productions.

“There are few moments in our lifetime where we get to witness the power of our language being uplifted on a global platform,” said Kanoa-Wong. “Releasing these films during Mahina ʻŌlelo Hawaiʻi is intentional and meaningful. It reflects the collective effort of our community to ensure ʻŌlelo Hawaiʻi continues to thrive.” (via Maui Now)

The Hawaiian version of Moana was actually recorded several years ago but was not globally available. A free premiere of the Hawaiian language version of Moana 2 will be held in Honolulu this weekend.

To watch either film in Hawaiian on Disney+, begin playing the film and then select settings in the upper right corner. Under “Audio” options, select ʻŌlelo Hawaiʻi.

In addition to Cravalho, the ʻŌlelo Hawaiʻi versions of Moana and Moana 2 star Kaipu Baker as Maui with vocals by Kaʻikena Scanlan, Pualalea Panaewa as Loto, Moses Goods as Kele, Kauʻi Kaina as Matangi with vocals by ʻOʻoe Carr, and Kailani Lucey as Simea.
