Despite progress being made on the attraction, which has been closed for well over a year, an amended permit has hinted towards a later opening of the Wildest Ride in the Wilderness.
Big Thunder Mountain Railroad Permit Amendment

The amendment states the permit has been extended through August 31, 2026, where it was originally set to expire on March 13, 2026. The spring season for Walt Disney World typically ends at the end of May with the start of Cool Kids Summer.
Big Thunder Mountain Railroad should hopefully reopen this spring. Changes will include an updated opening scene with a transformation of the Rainbow Caverns, refreshed Audio-Animatronics, and gold props. Here is the concept art of the new Rainbow Caverns opening scene:

The trains will enter the Rainbow Caverns, full of hundreds of bats, phosphorescent pools, and shimmering stalagmites and stalactites.

Thunder will then rumble as the scene changes to something menacing as the mountain “fights back.”
