Gunn was diagnosed with ALS a.k.a. Lou Gehrig’s Disease in 2024. He passed away at his home in Toronto on Monday, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

He began his own production company, Gunn Films, in 2001 and co-founded Solstice Studios in 2018.

Gunn pitched Freaky Friday to Disney just a few years after their second adaptation of the 1972 novel. He also produced the 2025 sequel, Freakier Friday. His producer credits also include The Haunted Mansion (2003), College Road Trip (2008), Bedtime Stories (2008), Race to Witch Mountain (2009), Bad Santa 2 (2016), and Cruella (2021).

Prior to Freaky Friday, he ran development at John Hughes’ Great Oaks Entertainment, which produced Disney’s live-action 101 Dalmatians and 102 Dalmatians, as well as Flubber (1997). Gunn also worked on Home Alone 3.

In 2001, he established the Disney Writers Program. He worked with five unproduced screenwriters who went on to have their own successful careers, including David Berenbaum (Elf, The Haunted Mansion).
