After several of its recent original films have either underperformed or outright bombed, Pixar has bounced back with Hoppers, which topped the box office and outperformed expectations in its opening weekend.
‘Hoppers’ Earns $46M in Domestic Opening Weekend
Hoppers opened in theaters on March 6, 2026, after an extensive marketing campaign that included everything from a Super Bowl spot to a Yogurtland flavor. The original story centers on Mabel, a teenage environmental activist who “hops” her consciousness into a robotic beaver to try to stop an industrial development.
The film is certified Fresh on Rotten Tomatoes, with a 94% Tomatometer (critic) score and a matching 94% Popcornometer (audience) score. Now we know Hoppers is an actual hit with audiences: box office reports on Sunday, March 8, reveal that the movie has earned $46 million at the US box office as well as $88 million globally.

That not only means Hoppers premiered at #1, but also earned the best opening for a Pixar original film — as well as an original animated movie in general — since Coco (2017). And since it was projected to earn $40 million, Hoppers has already outperformed expectations, with its success attributed to strong word-of-mouth.

Previous Pixar original films have not drawn anywhere near the same numbers as their franchise sequels. The 2023 film Elemental had the second-worst opening weekend in the animation studio’s history upon its release, and the summer 2025 release Elio officially bombed as Pixar’s worst-performing movie ever.

While Elio failed to find its audience, Elemental has become a sleeper hit since its Disney+ release, when it became one of the most-watched films on the platform.
