‘Casper’ Live-Action Series in the Works, Disney+ Won Bidding War

A live-action “Casper” series is in the works for Disney+. So far, it’s in the very early stages of development and is a modern update on the classic ghost story. Disney won against other major streamers to gain access to the project.

It comes from Rob Letterman and Hilary Winston, who are the executive producers of another Disney+ supernatural series, Goosebumps. Letterman and Winston are writing, with Letterman set to direct. Steven Spielberg, who executive produced the 1995 Universal movie Casper starring Christina Ricci is also involved.

While details are scarce, according to Deadline, it is believed to have a dark edge to it in the way Wednesday tackles the Addams Family lore.

It will be Universal Studio Group’s first project on Disney+. Universal TV also has series on Netflix, Prime Video, Apple TV, and Hulu. The potential of having series on all major streaming services could have been a main reason why Disney+ won.

No word yet on when we can expect to see it on Disney+, but stay tuned!
