Disney shared a behind-the-scenes look at the creation of a new limited edition Padmé Amidala doll inspired by the lake scene in Star Wars: Attack of the Clones. The doll will be available for purchase on Star Wars Day, May the 4th.

The dress features flowing fabric with ombre coloring and sparkling accents. The embroidery artwork on the cape is inspired by the architecture and style of the written language of Naboo.

Design Manager J shared that it was challenging to craft the costume due to the scale.

“Finding a fabric that drapes well at this small size is especially difficult, due to the size of the weave or knit versus the small amount used,” J said. “On a person, chiffon drapes easily, but on a doll the same material will appear stiffer and gathering on the outfit will be very large.”

The necklace, arm cuffs, and back of dress charm are made of metal but have an enamel fill with an iridescent sheen that is inspired by mother of pearl. Finishing touches include the intricate hairdo and glamorous makeup.

It takes approximately one year for a doll like this to go from concept through approvals, development, and production. The team had never created a doll head for Natalie Portman before so they created a brand-new head sculpt for this dress using scans of the actress’ face.

The Padmé Amidala Limited Edition Collector’s Doll launches at 8 a.m. PST on May the 4th on DisneyStore.com. It will also be coming soon to Walt Disney World Resort and Disneyland Resort.
