Disney and Pixar have once again teamed up with Mattel to create a line-up of innovative new toys inspired by Toy Story 5. The toy company behind Barbie and Hot Wheels has worked on the Toy Story franchise since the second film.

“Mattel did a really good job of partnering with Disney, partnering with Pixar, to make sure that they really did capture those key moments,” said Tracy Thurman, vice president, product design, hardlines, Disney. “I think it’s just got better. And of course, they’ve expanded their range so significantly. There are action figures, vehicles, plush role play … it’s a vast array of types of toys.”
To create the new toys, Disney and Pixar gave the Mattel team early access to the film’s script and assets, although these were subject to change as the movie was developed. Nick Karamonos, senior vice president, action figures and entertainment partnerships, Mattel, said the new products are different from past Toy Story toys.
“We’ve been partners with Disney for many, many years,” said Karamonos. “We’ve done Toy Story for many, many years, so we have a great relationship with Disney, and on Toy Story, it’s been very symbiotic. We got the meta idea that the movie is about toys and tech. It was an iterative process of script reading and assets, back and forth, as our designers were conceptualizing that in the form of a toy, bringing those characters to life, sometimes in a different way than we have before.”
Mattel’s technologically advanced new Toy Story 5 toys include the 16″ Ultimate Action Buzz and Woody figures. They incorporate animatronic technology including synchronized mouth, eye, and neck movement with clap and pose recognition. Buzz and Woody can detect when the other is nearby and talk to each other.
There are also five interactive figures at a seven-inch scale dubbed the Playscale Interactactables: Woody, Buzz, Jessie, Forky, and the new Lilypad. These figures all have signature phrases and character recognition so they can communicate with one another.
The Giddy-Up Bullseye RC is a a remote-control horse that integrates with the Playscale figures. Kids can have Woody, Jessie, or Buzz ride Bullseye with motion, sound, and character reactions.
According to Kristen Sanzari, product design manager, and Baxter Crane, product designer, Mattel, these toys mark Mattel’s biggest technological leap.
“I was so happy those finally came to life,” said Sanzari. “Getting the voices to match the animatronics was probably the most time-consuming part.”
“People hold these characters in their memory so dear and close,” Thurman said. “Mattel has done a fantastic job with this line, because the main premise of the film is we’re seeing the old gang back together, but now we have tech being introduced, which is something that everybody can relate to in their households. We really wanted to make sure that we infused tech into these toys, and I think they did a great job pulling that innovation through so that it does tie directly to the film, to those core memories that people have, but in a very new way that feels appropriate for today and especially appropriate for this film.”
The Toy Story 5 also line-up includes the following toys. They all launch this spring unless otherwise noted.
