Orlando International Airport (MCO) has shared an updated vision for phase 2 of their expansion plan. Notable is the lack of the airport’s famous carpet in concept video for the atrium.
MCO Phase 2 Updates

The atrium will get a new sleek design of mostly white with touches of pale blue and green plants. Previously, the carpet covered most of the floor, but it will be replaced by white hard flooring. The more whimsical green lampposts will be removed and wood benches will be replaced by white chairs.

MCO hopes to streamline the arrival process with a variety of updates inside and out. These include additional parking, self-service bag drop stations, improved real-time flight information displays (pictured above), and optional facial recognition technology at security.

The carpet will remain at the airport’s gates, where guests can enjoy smart seating with integrated charging.

There will be a VR theme park zone, smart restrooms with real-time monitoring, biometric payment options at retail and dining locations, and interactive AR mirrors in select stores. Several new restaurants and markets will open.

An optional biometric facial scan will also be available during the boarding process.
For reference, below is what the MCO atrium looks like today.
