Disney Animation recently shared eight concept art images from The Lion King on their Instagram account.
The Lion King Concept Art

From the concept art, we can tell that the final film deviated a little from the images, though there are several that look almost exactly like their on-screen counterparts. Pride Rock, seen above, for instance, is a slightly different shape.

From the film’s opening sequence, “The Circle of Life,” this image of the birds against the sunrise is similar to what we see instead.

The birds in the final cut looked a little bit different but fairly close to the concept art above as they scatter from the elephants walking.

Aside from some coloration differences, the flamingos flying in the opening of The Lion King are also almost spot-on for the concept art above.

Similarly, the zebras on the move are also nearly identical to the film.

Similarly, the baby giraffe walking into the sunlight looks fairly similar.

These animals migrating towards Pride Rock look different, especially with the different Pride Rock in the distance.

Finally, fast forward to the “Hakuna Matata” sequence. Timon, Pumbaa, and Simba are walking across the log in front of a bright moon. This is also very similar to how the scene plays out in the final film.
