Howard University, a research university located in Washington, D.C., awarded Iger the honorary degree in recognition of both his business leadership and his longstanding relationship with the university.

An honorary Doctor of Laws degree, also known as an LL.D., is typically awarded to individuals who have made significant contributions to public service, business, law, education, or society at large. Universities often reserve the distinction for leaders whose work has had a major cultural or social impact.

“I must say, there’s something very special about this,” Iger said while accepting the honor. “Part of it is the personal connection that I have through Chadwick Boseman and my friend Reggie Simmons. Part of it is just what Howard stands for – its reputation, its meaning.”

Both Iger and Disney share a history with Howard University. During Iger’s tenure leading The Walt Disney Company, Disney helped establish the Disney Storytellers Fund and also supported the construction of the Chadwick A. Boseman College of Fine Arts Center. Boseman, best known to Disney fans for portraying T’Challa in Black Panther, graduated from Howard University in 2000.

In a recent interview shared ahead of the ceremony, Iger also offered career advice to graduates entering today’s rapidly changing job market.

He encouraged graduates to remain adaptable and continue learning throughout their careers, emphasizing skills like communication, creativity, critical thinking, and relationship-building. He also spoke about the growing role of artificial intelligence, saying technology should be embraced “as an enabler, not feared.”
