Disneyland Must Retire Gas-Powered Autopia Cars by February 2027 Under State Agreement

Disneyland now has a firm deadline to retire the gas-powered vehicles on Autopia, with the attraction required to transition away from gasoline engines by February 1, 2027.

According to KTLA, Disneyland must retire the current gas-powered Autopia vehicles by February 1, 2027, under an agreement with the California Air Resources Board.

The deadline provides the clearest timeline yet for the future of the classic Tomorrowland attraction, which Disneyland has already announced will be converted to a fleet of fully electric vehicles.

Disneyland officials previously stated that the resort is currently designing, engineering, and testing a fully electric Autopia vehicle prototype. While the attraction is expected to receive a significant update as part of the project, Disneyland has not yet announced when Autopia will close for the conversion or when the attraction will reopen.

The February 2027 deadline stems from a 2024 settlement between Disneyland and the California Air Resources Board. Disneyland paid a $56,250 penalty after disclosing that the attraction’s Honda engines were operating without certified emissions controls. According to Disneyland officials, the issue was the result of an administrative oversight that was corrected without environmental impact.

As part of the agreement, Disneyland committed to retiring the current gas-powered engines and transitioning the attraction to electric vehicles.

Autopia has operated with gasoline-powered cars since Disneyland opened in 1955. The attraction remains one of the park’s original opening-day experiences and allows guests to drive vehicles along a guided roadway through Tomorrowland.

The move to electric vehicles is also part of Disneyland Resort’s broader sustainability goals. The resort has committed to reaching net zero emissions by 2030 and has continued investing in cleaner energy and environmental initiatives across the property.
