On Friday, June 19, ESPN will release a documentary that outlines the history and comeback of the Indianapolis Clowns. It is set to premiere at 9 p.m. EST.
Return of the Clowns

Narrated by former MLB player Doug Glanville (Philadelphia Phillies, Chicago Cubs, and Texas Rangers), Return of the Clowns follows the Indianapolis Clowns baseball team. They began as a Negro League team and have since become one of the teams associated with Banana Ball.
“The story of the Indianapolis Clowns is an important part of the history of baseball and the history of our country,” said Jose Morales, ESPN Vice President & Executive Producer, Original Content, in a release. “The Clowns were pioneers in combining sports and entertainment and their rebirth as part of Banana Ball is bringing their history to life every time they take the field.”
Nearly 100 years ago, the Clowns were formed in a still segregated South in the 1930s. The documentary highlights how they went from a groundbreaking part of baseball history to their present-day successes. It includes candid interviews, behind-the-scenes footage, and even rare archival materials. Some of the appearances include Jackie Bradley Jr., Malachai Mitchel, Mat Wolf, and Mo’ne Davis.
“Bringing the Indianapolis Clowns story to life is one of the greatest privileges I’ve ever had,” said Jesse Cole, the Creator of Banana Ball, in a release. “They were so much more than just a baseball team. They were pioneers, entertainers, and ambassadors for joy. These legends helped build this game into what it is today and now I’m so proud that a new generation gets to experience their story. We hope millions of fans discover the incredible legacy of the Clowns and the impact they continue to have on baseball today.”
