Leslie Iwerks’ acclaimed Disneyland Handcrafted documentary consists of rare archival footage from the construction of Disney’s first theme park. But none of that footage had sound. Everything from footsteps to hammer strikes to tractor engines had to be meticulously recreated by the team at Skywalker Sound.

The process involved not only finding and creating appropriate sounds but making sure they paired realistically with the footage. Sound Editor & Pre-Recording Mixer Bonnie Wild, Foley Artist Shelley Roden, and Foley Mixer Dennis Leonard talk about the techniques they used in a new behind-the-scenes video, below.
Disneyland Handcrafted can be viewed on YouTube and Disney+. The behind-the-scenes video is part of Disney’s push for Emmy consideration. It already earned gold at the Telly Awards for Craft, Best Sound and Sound Design and Craft, Best Use of Archival Footage, as well as silver for Best Documentary, long form.
