'Moana' Live Action Cast Celebrates Film in Sydney

At ICC Sydney on June 25, the cast of the live-action Moana film gathered to celebrate the upcoming film and the culture that inspired it.

Among the creatives at the event were star Catherine Laga’aia (who is from Australia), Dwayne Johnson, who plays Maui, director Thomas Kail, songwriter Opetaia Foa’i, and more.

This celebration included cultural performances of the Pacific Islands. Songwriter Foa’i, for example, performed as did Jaedyn Randell, who played Moana in the te reo Māori versions of both animated Moana films.

The live-action Moana remake will be in theaters on July 10 in the United States. It releases, as the image indicates above, on July 8 in Australia.

The film is directed by Emmy and Tony Award winner Kail (Hamilton); produced by Johnson, Dany Garcia, Beau Flynn, Hiram Garcia, and Lin-Manuel Miranda; and executive produced by Kail, Scott Sheldon, Charles Newirth, and Auliʻi Cravalho (the original voice of Moana in the animated films Moana and Moana 2).

Moana features original songs by Miranda, Foaʻi, and Mark Mancina, and an original score composed by Mancina.
