After an almost two-month closure for refurbishment, Pirates of the Caribbean at Disneyland has reopened, and it features a brand-new Audio-Animatronic! As revealed on Friday morning, the ride’s iconic skeleton sitting on treasure is now a transforming animatronic character.

Pirates of the Caribbean Refurbishment

Both the interior and exterior of Pirates of the Caribbean were refurbished. We previously reported on the exterior queue being repainted. Flowers have been planted around the attraction plaque, which sits in the queue on the lower floor underneath the main entrance. Otherwise, we did not notice any new changes.

Other than the new animatronic, the attraction itself is not substantially different.

The transforming animatronic is in the Pirates Grotto, which is a treasure room before guests arrive at Tortuga in the middle of a battle. It’s viewable from the left side of the boat.

The pirate was previously a static skeleton figure, which used a mirror effect to reveal the changing faces. Now he lifts up a golden coin, which curses him to become frozen in time, transforming his living face into a skull. With the transformation, his arm drops, breaking the curse. But his greed leads him to look at the coin in awe again, forcing himself into an endless loop.
