Disney’s Polynesian Village Resort has released a new Nature Guide with activities for kids and families. The guide mentions the historic kukui nut tree that was cut down a few weeks ago.

The guide is available with a pack of crayons at the check-in desk inside the Great Ceremonial House. Just ask a Cast Member for help.

Inside is a welcome message and a map of the resort highlighting these areas: the entrance to Great Ceremonial House, pathway near Oasis Pool, beach near Island Tower, lawn at Island Tower, and Sunset Point. There’s a table of contents with activities for each spot.

The activities ask guests to check off different animals they see, go on a sensory hunt, design a butterfly, identify plants, explore colors, and more amidst the resort’s natural landscape.

One page is dedicated to the plants at the Great Ceremonial House entrance and guests are asked to look for the kukui nut tree. Unfortunately, the tree was cut down in June after Disney horticulturalists determined it could no longer survive in the wake of a uniquely difficult Florida winter.
Donated to Disney by the people of Hawai’i in 1997, the Aleurites moluccana was believed to be the only tree of its kind in mainland North America.

Though the tree is gone, the rest of the guide should provide some fun for young guests.
