In an Instagram video posted yesterday, July 13, Animals at Disney and Disney Conservation announced that Disney will once again be participating in the Tour de Turtles.
Tour de Turtles
With the help of Catherine Laga’aia, star of the live action Moana, the Disney arms announced this year’s Tour de Turtles participation will be Moana-themed. Disney’s event takes place at Disney’s Vero Beach Resort, where guests can see staff engaging in turtle conservation tasks.
That includes adding trackers to the backs of the turtles to see how far they go, hence the Tour de Turtles name. This process helps scientists better understand how to protect the endangered turtles. Run by the Sea Turtle Conservancy, the event has multiple participants with multiple turtles that folks can track the progress of online.
As of writing, Disney has not announced the actual date of the event, just that it will be coming “later this summer.” It is also not yet listed on the events page for Tour de Turtles. Each turtle is raising awareness for a different topic.
So far, this year’s other participant turtles are:
- Jennifer Slowpez – Commercial Longline Fisheries
- Isla – Plastic Debris
- Marina – Water Quality
- JULina – Adult Harvest for Consumption
- Scarlett – Oil Spills
- Luna – Light Pollution
- ID&Sea – Climate Change
- Missy Shelliott – Plastic Debris
- Milagro – Boat Strikes
- Krysta – Beach Erosion
- Girl Power – Marine Debris & Entanglement
- Fin Diesel – Adult Harvest for Consumption
Disney Conservation Fund’s unnamed turtle will raise awareness for Light Pollution, and Disney Cruise Line’s turtle will raise awareness for Coastal Erosion.
