Lightning McQueen’s Giant Race Simulator from Cars 3 is Being Constructed for His New Show at Hollywood Studios

A few weeks ago, Disney announced Lightning McQueen’s Racing Academy for Disney’s Hollywood Studios. With the recent track record of character shows at Walt Disney World, there has been some concern that this would be yet another experience where characters simply appear, pose for pictures, and then leave. However, based on what Disney is constructing for this particular new show debuting in 2019, I think it’s safe to say that they are making a rather large investment in the Cars-related entertainment offering.

When the show debuts, guests will see Lightning McQueen board a giant racing simulator as seen in Cars 3. The massive prop is said to work just like the one seen in the movie, complete with rather large, custom made projection surface. Check out the clip below if you haven’t seen the film:

In case you missed it, here’s the official show description from Disney:

“At Lightning McQueen’s Racing Academy, located near Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster, you’ll come face-to-face with racing legend Lightning McQueen, who is excited to showcase what he’s learned over the years with you – the next generation of rookie racers. Of course, as Lightning McQueen has discovered throughout his career, things don’t always go according to plan, and he has to think fast to get back on course. With friends Tow Mater, Cruz Ramirez and the gang from Radiator Springs on his side, Lightning gears up for the challenge.”

Lightning McQueen’s Racing Academy will debut in 2019 at the Sunset Showcase theater in Disney’s Hollywood Studios.

  1. Given the location and Aerosmith’s aging popularity, any chance they’ll re-theme Rock n’ Roll-ercoaster to Cars?

    • I was thinking the same thing. To get to this location, I believe you’d have to go through the Rock N Roller Coaster courtyard, which will be a bit odd if they’re not connected. While I’d prefer for a Cars ride like Radiator Springs to be outside, I wonder if they’ll just re-theme RnRC to Cars and have a Cars land created.
