Crews continue to move dirt as they prepare for construction of the new Cars area in Magic Kingdom. Not a land on its own, the Cars area will be part of Frontierland, replacing Rivers of America and Tom Sawyer Island.
Rivers of America Construction
We saw an excavator working near the former Tom Sawyer Island docks, moving dirt around. There are large piles of dirt where the island used to be and most structures have been torn down.
Concept art for the new Cars area indicates the riverside boardwalks of Frontierland will stay and there will be a smaller river in the area. For construction, however, the entirety of Rivers of America was drained.
The Liberty Square Riverboat dock will also remain. It’s currently being used as an extended queue for The Haunted Mansion.
Haunted Mansion Construction Walls

Speaking of The Haunted Mansion, we checked on its construction walls. The entire outdoor queue has been surrounded by walls that block guest views of the old river.

These walls run from the Riverboat Landing to the actual Haunted Mansion entrance.

We got a better look at the construction walls and scrim installed in the graveyard earlier this month. Crews placed markers in this area back in July, possibly for a new walkway that is planned between The Haunted Mansion and Big Thunder Mountain Railroad.
The scrim and walls now cut the graveyard in half. Madame Leota’s tombstone and some others are still visible close to the queue.
Cars Area

The Cars area will be called Piston Peak National Park, inspired by real-life national parks, particularly the Rocky Mountains. Sightlines will be maintained with architecture gradually becoming “Car-itecture” within the Cars-themed space.
There will be a large geyser, water features, barrel bridges, and two attractions. One is a rally race ride, the other will be more family-friendly. A new original car character pays homage to classic Disney cartoons.
A new Disney Villains Land is also in the works near Big Thunder Mountain Railroad.
