Disney Reportedly Pushing Back on Unauthorized Biography of Former CEO Bob Iger

Disney is reportedly pushing back on the publication of an unauthorized biography focused on former CEO of The Walt Disney Company Bob Iger.

Unauthorized Biography

Former Disney CEO Bob Iger

According to a report from Puck News, Disney has hired Charles Harder, a national litigation and trial attorney who practices in the areas of media law, First Amendment, defamation, privacy, reputation protection, entertainment, intellectual property, and business litigation.

Harder has sent multiple letters to publisher Harper Collins, seeking information about an unauthorized biography of Iger written by The Wall Street Journal’s Robbie Whelan. The book is supposedly titled The House of Mouse: Bob Iger and the Fight for the Soul of Disney.

The letters from Harder to Harper Collins state that Whelan has covered Iger and Disney negatively in previous publications and slams Whelan as “a supposedly biased journalist committing a hit job on Iger and the company.” They also demand to know what’s being included in the book and want time to fact-check the book.

The book is reportedly “a thorough and unvarnished portrait of one of the most famous C.E.O.s of the past 50 years, including his abrupt Disney exit as the pandemic began in 2020 and his return to power less than two years later.”

Chapek and Iger - New Details WSJ

Though Disney is technically Harder’s client, not Iger himself, Iger is rumored to be the driving force behind the inquiry and is concerned about the contents of the book. Some believe people like Bob Chapek and disgruntled former employees may have given Whelan information for the book. It’s been previously referred to as the “Bob vs. Bob” book, implying it will heavily focus on the relationship between Bob Iger and Bob Chapek.

You likely remember Iger chose Chapek to be his successor in 2020, and then Chapek was fired in late 2022. Iger took over again, but has now passed the CEO title to Josh D’Amaro.

The book does not have a release date yet.
