Back in 2017, Orlando International Airport began construction on a $3 billion expansion project to add a third terminal, dubbed Terminal C. As of this week, according to the Greater Orlando Airport Authority, the project is nearly 90% complete, and now has an expected opening month!
Per the latest meeting of the Greater Orlando Airport Authority, the first phase of the South Terminal Project, also known as Terminal C, is 87% complete. Once completed, the new terminal will house 19 new gates, adding capacity for up to 10 million additional passengers per year at the bustling airport. Also planned are a number of innovative technological advances, including 100% automated screening lanes at TSA security checkpoints, state-of-the-art RFID baggage tracking, and an expedited “bags first” approach at Customs & Border Patrol international arrivals.
The Greater Orlando Airport Authority gave the following projected timeline today for the terminal’s entry into operations:
- February 28, 2022: Temporary Certificate of Occupancy
- May 1, 2022: Substantial completion of Terminal C
- May through July 2022: Transitioning from construction to operations
- July 2022: Official start of operations
This may well be your next point of arrival when you fly to Orlando to visit Walt Disney World or Universal Orlando Resort, so it’s certainly something to look forward to. Further details regarding an exact opening date, flight schedules, and carriers served will be released at a later date as the terminal approaches operation.
