Enchanted Tales with Belle
Relive the magic of Disney´s Beauty and the Beast during an unforgettable reenactment starring Belle, Lumiere… and you!
“Once upon a time, there was a charming, intelligent woman whose name was Belle.”
Enchanted Tales with Belle opened with the revamped Fantasyland in 2012 and is an excellent diversion from the chaos that can overwhelm guests – especially children – in the Magic Kingdom. Guests enter a small cottage and are ushered into Belle’s father’s workshop where the walls and shelves are adorned with new inventions and plenty of random doodads, trinkets, and bric-a-brac. One wall is adorned with a “magic mirror” that opens via a clever (and slightly confounding) visual trick, which leads to the action being moved into another room with an Audio-Animatronic cupboard containing props and costumes. At this point, guests are selected to play roles in the story of Beauty and the Beast, though most participants are children. (Warning: If you are not the type of person who likes to perform in front of others, it’s best to stay toward the back and not make eye contact with the Cast Member who is wrangling would-be actors for their roles.)
The last step is moving into a beautiful library where Lumière greets the crowd and has everyone yell “Surprise” when Belle – played by a live actor – enters the room. What follows is a heavily truncated version of how Belle met the Beast and fell in love. The participants act out their minor roles (they are mostly children, after all) and everything builds to the moment where Belle dances with Beast who is almost always played by a young boy and the varying reactions from show-to-show are endearing and sweet. Some may blush, others clearly are entranced with Belle’s beauty and you can often see complete strangers snapping photos of the moment since they are so adorable. (A move that would be heavily frowned upon outside the confines of the attraction. Belle exits, followed by the audience and everyone moves on to live happily ever after…or at least moves on to return to the sweltering heat of the Florida sun.
Behind the Schemes:
When it comes down to the truth, Enchanted Tales with Belle is a souped-up version of a Meet and Greet. At the conclusion of the show, all guests are encouraged to get their picture taken with Belle, which of course is available for purchase by using either a QR code or URL happily provided by Cast Members.
Live shows involving participants – particularly as many as this attraction – constantly teeter on the edge of “Will something go wrong or will someone blow their role?” It is definitely worth at least one viewing to not only take in the cuteness of the attraction, but also for the possibility that things may come off the rails during the show. Whether or not you are interested in the entire premise of Enchanted Tales with Belle, there’s a very good chance that your kids will love it. It’s sweetly saccharine, and it’s a great chance to slow down your day and enjoy a production that doesn’t feel rushed or harried in its presentation.
Reality Check:
The original fairy tale was written by Gabrielle-Suzanne Barbot de Villeneuve in 1740. In the original version, the main character was simply known as Beauty. This remained true until she became known as Belle in Disney’s 1991 animated film, Beauty and the Beast.
The screenplay for Disney’s Beauty and the Beast was written by Linda Woolverton – the first female to write a full-length feature film for the company. It was also the first screenplay that Woolverton had ever written.
Candles and plates cannot talk, let alone sing and dance. Another myth shattered.
