Everyone’s favorite bounty hunter, Boba Fett, is getting a standalone film. Director James Mangold is slated to write and direct the film, centered on Boba Fett. No further details on plot or cast have been revealed yet.
There’s been hope and whisperings of a standalone Fett movie for years. Boba Fett was first introduced into the Star Wars world in 1978 with the Star Wars Holiday Special, followed by his film debut in 1980’s Empire Strikes Back and in 1983’s Return of the Jedi as the one who sealed Han’s fate by bringing him to Jabba the Hutt.
This isn’t the first standalone film in the famed Lucasfilm franchise. Rouge One was released in 2016, followed by Solo: A Star Wars Story releasing in theaters this weekend. Boba Fett gained cult status with the release of the original trilogy, despite having no reveal moments of who we’re dealing with behind the heavy and bruised armor. After the Star Wars Holiday Special aired, costumed characters of Boba Fett started appearing in malls and special events, with “Wanted” posters being displayed for promotion of the upcoming films. It also aided in distinguishing him from the Imperial characters of the film.
James Mangold, the director for the film also has director credits for The Wolverine and Logan, with writing credits for Disney’s 1988 film Oliver & Company. On his official Wikipedia page, it lists that he’s working on an Untitled Boba Fett Film, with TBA listed under ‘year’.
