Disney Cruise Line is one step closer to having a second private port in the Bahamas.
The National Economic Council approved the proposal by Disney Cruise Line Island Development Ltd. to acquire the peninsula known as Lighthouse Point on the island of Eleuthera. The proposal will immediately enter negotiations for a Heads of Agreement, which will outline the size and scope of the project, as well as the obligations of Disney Cruise Line Island Development Ltd. and the Bahamian government. The Heads of Agreement will then be brought before the Bahamian Parliament. It should be noted that the land is privately owned, and Disney Cruise Line Island Development Ltd. already has a purchase agreement with the current owner.
Included as part of the proposal was Disney’s commitment to “low density development and sustainable design, public access, and the restoration of various historical and cultural sites.”
The proposal to purchase has proven popular. Recent polling revealed that over 60 percent of Bahamians “very much” or “somewhat” support Disney’s plan. The government also noted Disney’s commitment to environmental stewardship.
We will update you as the story develops.
Wish whoever was running DCL was running WDW in Orlando. Clearly isn’t Chapek at the helm of DCL, he wouldn’t make the investment in ‘fun’ for an island. WDW Orlando keeps getting resort and trying to fill the parks to a hugely uncomfortable number as they cut back cast member and grow lines. No new parks. Only new areas that don’t even make up areas they closed before! Bob Iger needs a mindset change and new leadership for their USA theme parks. Badly.
