“Sister Act 3” in Development for Disney+; Whoopi Goldberg’s Involvement in Doubt

Sister Act fans, your prayers have been answered… but it may be without Whoopi Goldberg.

According to a Variety report, Disney is currently developing Sister Act 3 for the upcoming streaming service, Disney+. The studio has reportedly tapped “Insecure” co-executive producer Regina Hicks and “Star” showrunner Karin Gist to pen the screenplay.

But according to Entertainment Weekly‘s Nick Romano, it may be a Hail Mary to see Goldberg return as Deloris Van Cartier. The Disney Legend, despite expressing interest in returning to the role, will likely not appear (or at least in nothing larger than a cameo appearance). In a statement to Entertainment Weekly, a representative for Goldberg claims that “…it is our understanding that this is not a continuation and Whoopi is not involved.”

Goldberg herself addressed the rumors on “Good Morning Britain” back in September, believing the film to be a reboot rather than a sequel:

“We’ve been all over Disney begging and they’ve decided that they’re going to go in a different direction with Sister Act. So it won’t be Sister Act 3, it’ll be a brand-new rendition of Sister Act… And I guess I’ll walk through a scene and that’s how they’ll say I was part of it.”
