White Chocolate and Purple Sweet Potato Mousse, Salted Caramel and Maple Meringue with Coconut – $6.50
It’s a strange dessert, but it works very well. They really changed the overall approach from last year, and the effort shines through. The sweet potato pie flavor is very apparent in the mousse and the coconut sprinklings and salted caramel combine to pull this dish through making for one great dessert. Recommended, even if it is a bit weird.
Chocolate, Peanut Butter and Pretzel Crunch – $6.50
It’s a pretty as it is delicious. A decadent chocolate cake is filled with a peanut butter crunch and a glimmering, shimmering raspberry sauce, topped with a pretzel and chocolate garnish. It is well documented on this site how much we love peanut butter desserts, so it’s no surprise that this was one of the stand-out new items of 2019. Yeah, it’s a little small for $6.50, but it’s a work of art for the price.
Lemon and Blood Orange Tart – $6.50
Another hit, citrus lovers will enjoy indulging on this lemon and blood orange tart. I’m not a big citrus fan, but even I was won over by a bite with a fresh blueberry. It has the perfect tartness to balance the blood orange sweetness. Definitely not a one-note dessert. Highly recommended.
Artist Palette Jumbo Chocolate Chip Cookie – $5.50
I was thoroughly surprised by how good this cookie was, but also the time that went into making it is impressive. When we got the cookie, the “paint puddles” were not all dripping down the cookie, but carefully placed by a chef at the booth upon ordering. Every item at this festival requires some time to prepare for perfect presentation, and even this jumbo chocolate chip cookie is no exception. If you are in the mood for a chocolate chip cookie, this will hit the spot.
Neapolitan Beer Flight (3 Daughters Strawberry Nitro, Breckenridge Nitro Vanilla Porter, Young’s Double Chocolate Stout) – $9.50
This is the same beer flight served last year, but that doesn’t change how unique and interesting the flight is. You’re getting three beers poured with nitro instead of CO2, making for a unique and consistent flavor profile. The stout was a favorite of our group, vanilla up next with the strawberry blonde trailing due to an artificial taste to the flavoring. Recommended, it’s a unique and interesting way to try a few different beers.
Biagio Moscato d’Asti, Piedmont, Italy ($11/bottle) -$5.00
This is easy drinking, lower alcohol wine at 7% ABV. It’s not at all dry, it’s sweet, but not overly so. I hate to say it, but it’s wine for people who don’t like wine.
Florida Orange Groves Winery Black and Blue Port, St. Petersburg, FL ($50/bottle) – $8.00
This is a syrupy, almost medicinal tasting wine. It’s really fruity. I wouldn’t get this again.
3 Daughters Strawberry Blonde Nitro, St. Petersburg, FL (5% ABV) – $4.50
From 3 Daughters Brewing Company: “It is golden in color with a very slight pink hue and a white head. This blonde ale is infused with strawberries during secondary fermentation. The smell of strawberry dominates the aroma but there is a modest malt essence. The flavor is an even balance of malt and strawberry with just a little hop bitterness. It is crisp, dry and nitrogen gives it a smooth creamy finish.”
Breckenridge Nitro Vanilla Porter, Breckenridge, CO (5.4% ABV) – $4.50
From Breckenridge Brewery: “A variety of malts provide flavors of chocolate, roasted nut, caramel, and coffee. Imported vanilla beans from Papua New Guinea and Madagascar add complex and exotic flavors to this solid porter. The softening effect of nitrogen creates a velvety mouthfeel and highlights the flavors of the malts and vanilla.”
Young’s Double Chocolate Stout, Bedford, England (5.2% ABV) – $4.50
Honestly my new favorite beer of the festival, fans of Guinness and the like will LOVE this offering. It’s much lighter than Guinness and the chocolate finish is what makes it so great.
Cold Fashioned Coffee Cocktail – $9.50
I enjoy coffee-based cocktails quite a bit, so this was also right up my alley. It’s strong, but smooth with a hint of citrus. If it hits 40 degrees again, I’m not sure I’ll be having one, but I suspect I’ll find enough warm days to have a few of these over the next month.
