REVIEW: Macaron Topped Banana Caramel Cupcake from Contempo Cafe at Disney’s Contemporary Resort

Eating Disney cupcakes is a difficult job, but somebody’s gotta do it. Some cupcakes stand out for creative decorations, while others wow us with their taste. The Contempo Café at the Contemporary Resort almost never disappoints, so when we heard about the new Banana Caramel Cupcake, we were all about it. And then we found out it was topped with a macaron, and the snack game was forever changed.

Banana Caramel Cupcake

This beauty is topped by a dried banana chip and a macaron of your choice. The cupcakes in the case are topped with a few different macaron flavors to choose from, but I went for my favorite color. I probably should have taken flavor into consideration, but I’ve never met a macaron I didn’t like.

The scent of banana is strong as soon as we take the cupcake from the display case. Two of my favorite desserts have been combined into one snack for just $5.49. Oh, and they’re sparkly, so I’d say this is a win already.

There is a ring of buttercream icing with champagne-colored sprinkles around the outside. This is a filled cupcake, and the piece of cake that was removed has been turned upside down to create a top on the cupcake. Inside the caramel-flavored cake, there is a creamy banana pudding filling. Surprisingly, the cake isn’t soggy from the filling. It really goes together perfectly.

The consistency of the filling is sturdy, and more like custard. The flavor reminds me of banana candy, but it works. Since there isn’t an overwhelming amount of frosting, the filing helps balance out the cake. The sign said the cake and buttercream icing are caramel-flavored, but it’s a very subtle, sweet taste that might go undetected if you weren’t being paid to overanalyze the flavors.

The macaron on top was excellent, too. There were at least 4 different flavors of macarons to choose from when we were there, but this will probably change depending on availability. When we visited, the flavors were lemon, chocolate, pistachio, and raspberry.

Bottom line, this cupcake is delicious. Not that we expected anything less from the Contempo Café. If Banana Caramel doesn’t sound like your speed, you can still try the equally delicious Purple Potion Cupcake.

But can you really turn down a cupcake topped by a macaron?
