Animal Kingdom Lodge The Mara Easter Spring Garden Cake

REVIEW: Spring Garden Cake from The Mara at Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge

We’ve been hopping around the parks and resorts all day looking for the latest Easter treats. When we stopped by the Mara at Animal Kingdom Lodge, we spotted the new Spring Garden Cake in the cooler. It’s colorful and eye-catching, so of course we had to give it a try. And it’s huge!

They don’t look quite as appealing in these plastic take-away containers as they might in the display case. You notice the jelly beans have “bled” into the grass.

You should never eat yellow snow. Or yellow grass.

These cakes are beautiful once removed from their plastic domes. A massive green grass coconut cake is topped by a Mickey dome with uniquely printed ears. There are jelly beans and flowers along the Mickey dome, but the jelly beans tend to run. And by that I mean run away. Mine fell off and rolled away not long after I took it out of the package.

The flowers confused me, and even after talking to Cast Members, I’m still not satisfied with the answer. When I picked them up, they jiggled like rubber and then started to melt. I couldn’t decide what they were made from, so I asked. First, I was told jelly. After I pressed to know more about this “jelly” flower, then I was told it was probably white chocolate, or sugar.  Finally, a Cast Member told me that the flowers were sugar, but they got the jelly-like consistency from sitting in the cooler. Strange.

The ears are white chocolate discs and the Mickey dome has a dark chocolate covering with a lemon mousse center. The lemon is very faint, and I almost thought it was vanilla at first.

For the price of $5.99, this is a huge cake you could easily share, and it’s even topped by another mini dessert. The Mickey dome could be a dessert on its own instead of topping a huge cake. It’s really good, and there is plenty to share.

If you don’t like coconut, avoid this cake. The texture and strong coconut taste are just too overpowering for me. I shared this cake with someone who likes coconut, and they loved the cake. The cake wasn’t really my thing, but I would totally take another dark chocolate and lemon Mickey dome.

Coconut fans will want to hurry over to the Mara and get the new Spring Garden cake while they can. It’s a huge portion for the money, and plenty to share. Happy spring!

  1. I bought one and tried it out. To be honest, I didn’t think it tasted very good. The lemon mousse as you mentioned, had only a faint flavor and my coconut cake was dry. I actually feel the overall cake was too sweet, as well. It took me a few sit down sessions to finish it. The flowers are just sugar decor and the jelly beans were fine. There is another cake available– the African Violet Cake, that has berry preserves with the cake and a large, buttercream violet piped on top. That one may be better?
