Uniquely Disney: Canada Pavilion at Epcot’s World Showcase

Welcome to Uniquely Disney! Let’s head into Epcot, and to one of my favourite areas: World Showcase. The pavilion I have in mind is full of beauty, art and culture, and maple syrup—and is also my home and native land! O, Canada! Here are my top 3 favourite details of the Canada Pavilion in Epcot’s World Showcase!

Victoria Gardens

When you approach the Canada pavilion, you can’t help but be drawn in by the many striking visual aspects, including the Hotel du Canada (inspired by the Chateau Laurier in Ottawa, Ontario). One of the most beautiful, and my first top favourite in the Canada pavilion, is the Victoria Gardens. The sprawling gardens are colourful and meticulously groomed, reminiscent of the stunning Butchart Gardens in British Columbia. Lush waves of flowers, a pond and bridge, and a cute little cottage make up this pretty vista, which truly is a must-see. Everything about this garden is carefully planned out to create perfection and evoke a subtle, but authentically Canadian scene, including the stand of maple trees to represent the country’s symbol. Another fun little detail included in this pavilion is the subtle representations of the northern seasons, such as in the winter when Disney horticulturists plant white flowers to represent snow!

Canadian Rockies

My next top detail is a pavilion hidden gem (one of the many beautiful sights in World Showcase that you have to venture into a pavilion to find; yet they’re always worth the effort!) If you head up the stairs past the Northwest Mercantile and make your way to the back of the pavilion, you will find a whole other area to explore. Stroll by the old phone booth and lovely Eastern-Canadian style homes, and then take in the tucked-away beauty of Disney’s representation of the Canadian Rockies. Awe-inspiring rock formations and a stunning waterfall create the Walt Disney World version of this staggering Canadian range. If you take a closer look, you can also see that Imagineers used that classic technique, forced perspective, to make the pavilion Rockies look even larger. It’s an absolutely beautiful area and well worth the quick trip to the back of the pavilion. Canadian vistas are breathtaking, and Disney does an amazing job capturing the country’s beauty.

Mercantile Props

Each World Showcase pavilion has the opportunity for some shopping, whether it be for Walt Disney World merchandise, pavilion-themed merchandise, or special items specifically from the country you are visiting, and each shop is carefully and perfectly themed. Canada’s shop, the Northwest Mercantile, evokes a rustic Canadian feel with its log cabin look and carved sign. For my last top Disney detail, I’m not going big or awe-inspiring—my absolute favourite details are the small ones! Imagineers didn’t stop at just the design and look of the Mercantile; ever detail-oriented, they went above and beyond, and added some finishing touches to the shop’s exterior. With a sled, lanterns, and tools displayed on the face of the store, you will feel like you are stepping up to an old time mercantile in the true North!

  1. I’d love to see them sell Purdy’s chocolate hedgehogs or the Canadian Tin with assorted Canadian flavours.
