Security Metal Detectors & X-Ray Machines To Be Installed at Tokyo Disney Resort

In a surprising move on the part of the Oriental Land Company, Tokyo Disney Resort has announced that metal detectors and X-ray machines will be installed at both Tokyo Disneyland and Tokyo DisneySea. This follows a test conducted in August 2018, which ruffled quite a few feathers among the Tokyo Disney fan community. In their press release, the Oriental Land Company shared the following:

Oriental Land Co., Ltd. is continuing to introduce new security protocols at both Tokyo Disneyland and Tokyo DisneySea to enhance the safety of our Guests.
So far, additional security checks and patrols have been implemented at both Parks.
Metal detection gates, X-ray detectors and additional measures are being introduced to continue to enhance Guest safety.
Tokyo Disney Resort® continues to work with all neighboring partners and local authorities within the Resort area in order to create a safe and secure destination.

Currently, both parks use the flashlight wave and bag pat-downs formerly common in the domestic Disney parks. These measures were added following the 9/11 attacks. Security in tourist-heavy areas has increased across Japan as the nation prepares for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. The nation is anticipating an extreme tourism flux in the months surrounding the Olympics. It’s unknown whether these measures are permanent or when they will be installed. It could be as early as tomorrow, if the previous test is any indication.
