REVIEW: New Chocolate and Peppermint Eclair at Gasparilla Island Grill in Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort & Spa

A new holiday treat has arrived at Disney World’s Grand Floridian Resort and Spa in the form of a peppermint filled and chocolate topped eclair.

The eclair is available at Gasparilla Island Grill in the self-serve pastry cabinet for $5.49.

The eclair is split in half and in between the halves is a generous layer of peppermint flavored cream filling. The filling is a light pink with several spots of dark pink speckled throughout. The bottom layer of the pastry is plain and untouched, while the top layer has been dipped into chocolate and drizzled with white and pink chocolate. As the final touch, nonpareils, sugar sprinkles, jimmies, and peppermint stick-shaped sprinkles cover the very top of the dessert.

We cut the eclair in half to get a better look at the texture of the pastry itself. Cutting the eclair was rather difficult and took several sawing motions as well as a good amount of pressure to actually separate the pieces. Some of this difficulty was due to the hardened chocolate layer and some was due to the rather stale pastry.

Upon first bite, we were not impressed with this Disney dessert. The pastry is stale and flavorless, there is too much chocolate to be able to bite through it easily, and the peppermint cream tastes like toothpaste. It did not get any better with subsequent bites. The peppermint flavor was overwhelming and unpleasant and really weighed down the pastry.

Despite its cute exterior and sweet decorations, this eclair did not meet the mark for a delicious Disney dessert. If you are at the Grand Floridian and are looking for a sweet treat, we recommend getting a gingerbread cookie from the massive gingerbread house display. Save yourself the money, calories, and disappointment.
