Spider Tortoise Replaces Cairo Spiny Mouse at Disney's Animal Kingdom Theme Park

The Cairo Spiny Mouse was retired from the Gorilla Falls Exploration Trail at Disney’s Animal Kingdom late last year. The space has now been taken over by a spider tortoise.

Cairo Spiny Mouse to be retired from the Gorilla Falls Exploration Trail at Disney's Animal Kingdom Theme Park.

The mouse, pictured above in November 2025, was showing signs of labored breathing, and it was decided that he would retire to Rafiki’s Planet Watch. Spiny mice usually have a life expectancy of two years, and he is over four years old.

His space now has a new resident: a spider tortoise. They are found in the dry forests on the Southwestern coast of Madagascar.

They are called spider tortoises because there is a web-like pattern on their upper shell. They are also unique in that their bottom shells look like a hinge.
