REVIEW: Eat Actual Chocolate-Covered Crickets in NEW Halloween Creepy Crawly Critters Ice Cream, Plus We Tried The Great Candycopia Flavor from Salt & Straw at Disneyland Resort

It’s the time of year for creepy and candy. But nobody thought of putting them together in the same cup — until now. Salt & Straw is known for their unique ice cream flavors, from olive oil to pear and blue cheese and more, but they really went all out for Halloween this year. We stopped in to their location at Downtown Disney in the Disneyland Resort to see what spooky magic was brewing for the Halloween season.

“To summon the spine-chilling spirit(s) of the season, we’ve brought back to life our most eerie flavors,” reads the menu description, “all while asking ourselves ‘What would Dracula serve at his Howl-o-ween party?’ ‘Which candies would you always trade your loot for?’ How can we evoke the feeling of your hair rising up as you tiptoe through a haunted house?’ The answers just might scare you.”

We tried a couple of their Halloween flavors — The Great Candycopia and Creepy Crawly Critters — and we must say, they are even better than they sound on the menu.

The Great Candycopia

First up was The Great Candycopia. This flavor was amazing. The salted butterscotch ice cream was smooth with the perfect balance of sweet and salty flavors. The crisp shortbread was the best addition to the ice cream with a buttery rich sweetness and soft texture. In addition to that, there were also hints of peanut butter and caramel which surprisingly, wasn’t too much at all. Pecans and peanuts brought a little bit of a nutty flavor that complimented the butterscotch nicely. This ice cream is perfect for anyone looking for a rich, but sugary treat. It’s a great stand-alone flavor or paired with something else, which is what we did next.

Creepy Crawly Critters

This matcha ice cream itself was super refreshing with almost an extra sweet vanilla flavor. The toffee brittle mealworms had a caramel flavor, which added some richness to the matcha as well as extra texture. The little bits of chocolate crickets throughout the ice cream weren’t too noticeable but complimented the matcha nicely and made for a good refreshing treat.

These flavors, along with the other seasonal flavor Mummy’s Pumpkin Spiced Potion, are available all month long. But don’t wait too long to materialize at Downtown Disney — they will be spirited away to the great beyond after Halloween. A single scoop will run you $6.25, or $8.50 for a double scoop (if you need another flavor to wash those bugs down with.)
