RUMOR: Disney Could Move Select Upcoming Movie Releases to Disney+, With Other Titles Being Considered for Premier Access

There’s a chance that Disney’s Investor Day could reveal a new release strategy for Disney’s upcoming release slate.

Variety is reporting that Disney could be moving several upcoming films exclusively to Disney+. Back in October, the company announced that they were shifting their focus to direct-to-consumer entertainment, including the steaming service.

Among the titles discussed were the 101 Dalmatians prequel Cruella, starring Emma Stone as the classic Disney villain before her sinister turn, as well as the live-action adaptation of Pinocchio directed by Robert Zemeckis (Back to the Future, Who Framed Roger Rabbit?, Forrest Gump). In August, it was reported that Tom Hanks was interested in the part of Geppetto.

In addition, Disney could also consider additional “Premier Access” releases for tentpole films starting on the same date as their theatrical release, similar to what they did for the remake of Mulan earlier this year. Disney+ subscribers could purchase access to the film for three months for $30.00 at the same time it was released to theaters. (The film was made free for all subscribers last week.) On one hand, this could prove to be a blow to movie theaters, still reeling from Warner Bros.’ announcement that their entire 2021 slate would be released on HBO Max the same day as their theatrical release. On the other hand, this would allow the studio to release films that have been ready for months, including Marvel Studios’ Black Widow, and still provide access to areas whose theaters are still closed due tp the COVID-19 pandemic, as well as to watchers not yet feeling comfortable going to theaters.

Hopefully, things will become much clearer during the presentation. Keep reading WDWNT as we cover Disney’s Investor Day 2020!
