Recently on a trip to Disneyland Resort, we stopped at Salt & Straw in the Downtown Disney District. Salt & Straw has new flavors to try this month from their Vault Series, where they re-release past offerings for a limited time. We decided to give one of these limited time flavors a try.
Since the lift of the California stay-at-home order, the doors of Salt and Straw have been open for guests to go inside to grab their ice cream treats.
The menu located outside on a poster describes the Vault Series as well as which flavors have returned for the month. For February there are five limited time flavors available. We decided to take the Salted Caramel Cupcake for a spin.
Salted Caramel Cupcake Ice Cream – $6.25 (for one scoop)
Hunks of chocolate cake slathered with salted caramel frosting and cake crumbs soak up the fleur de sel-spiked cream for a flavor that’s reminiscent of ice cream cakes from birthday parties past.
This ice cream is loaded with flavor. The base is a smooth vanilla ice cream which is spiked in fleur de sel, a type of salt. At first bite, the first thing you’ll take note of is the very intense salty flavor.
The pieces of cake were dense with a strong caramel flavor and became somewhat chewy after sitting in the ice cream.
The flavor description noted that inside the ice cream were pieces of chocolate cake, but it seemed to be more of a mix of chocolate and caramel cake to us.
The caramel flavor was surprisingly the most subtle, as the vanilla and salt were much more dominant.
If you’re looking for a sweet and salty treat, this is the one, but be ready for an intense salty flavor that somewhat overpowers the ice cream. We did really enjoy it though.
There are plenty of other desserts to try at Disneyland Resort, such as the Cookies and Cream Pie Rice Crispy Treat from Trolley Treats or the Snickerdoodle Glazed Beignets at Ralph Brennan’s Jazz Kitchen. Will you be trying any of the Vault Series flavors from Salt and Straw? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below.
