GUIDE: Booking Lightning Lane With Disney Genie+ at Walt Disney World

Disney Genie debuted this morning, and with it, Genie+ and Lightning Lane, the new paid replacement to the former FastPass+ program. We’re at the parks today checking out the new features of the program, and we have a full guide for you on booking Lightning Lane with Genie+.

At 7:00 a.m., guests can purchase same-day Genie+. Guests can also purchase Genie+ in advance as part of their ticket package.

Genie Recommendations

The My Day tab will show you Genie’s recommendations for your visit.

We were able to purchase Genie+ right at 7:00 a.m. and proceed to book our first Lightning Lane attraction. At the time, the following attractions were available to reserve.

The complimentary Genie service provides a recommended “good time to go” alongside a forecasted wait.

The standard Genie service also offers recommendations for mobile orders around the park.

When you switch to the Tip Board tab, it will show you the current standby wait (as we were using the app before the park was open, this was not available) and the next reservation window for Genie+ Lightning Lane.

By clicking “Book Experience,” guests can reserve a time to arrive at the attraction. We booked our first Lightning Lane selection for Peter Pan’s Flight, at the offered time of 10:10 a.m. Each reservation window is for a period of one hour, so we will have between 10:10 a.m. and 11:10 a.m. to arrive at the attraction. We found that the old FastPass rules still apply and you can successfully tap in 5 minutes early or up to 15 minutes late.

As pictured above, the select attractions that require Individual Lightning Lane purchase are also displayed. The price, which fluctuates based on the day, attraction, and park, is listed.

All attractions that list Genie+ Lightning Lane are included in the per ticket per day fee. The price of Genie+ varies by date, with prices from $15-$29.

Changing Lightning Lane Experiences

Unlike individual Lightning Lane, those booked with Genie+ can be canceled. To change your Lightning Lane plans, you will need to cancel the experience and book a new one.

At Disney’s Hollywood Studios, we had originally reserved a 6:10 p.m. slot for Slinky Dog Dash. Later, we noticed a 1:55 p.m. arrival time become available. However, by the time we canceled our first booking on the My Day tab and returned to the Tip Board, the earlier time slot was once again unavailable. We were able to select a new booking for 4:25 p.m. As such, we recommend rebooking at your own risk as availability fluctuates.

Booking Additional Genie+ Lightning Lane Experiences

With Genie+ Lightning Lane, you may only have one experience reserved at a time. The exception to this rule is if your first Lightning Lane reservation is more than two hours away. After a two-hour period, you may book another attraction.

For example, with our late afternoon Slinky Dog Dash reservation, we will be able to book a second experience at 11 a.m. (two hours after the park opens).

Once you arrive at the attraction within your reservation window or the window expires, you may book another attraction. There is no set limit on the number of attractions you can experience with Genie+ Lightning Lane per day. However, you may only use Lightning Lane once per attraction per day.

  1. Can you book a re-ride. There seems to be some confusion if this is possible? If I can only ride, let’s say Everest, once per day using Genie+, that is a significant thumbs down for the new system

  2. Does it just charge the credit card linked to your band/card? And is it true you can only book each attraction once??

  3. I appreciate you posting this but I don’t really get how this 2 hour window thing works. Do you mean that if I buy Genie+ then at 7am in the morning I can make only one lightning lane reservation and can’t make any other Genie+ lightning lane reservations until I get off that ride? Is it a one at a time reservation for lightning lanes then?
