The latest variant of COVID-19, called omicron, has now been detected in Florida. Cases were already found in some other states.
The first Tampa Bay case was detected at James A. Haley Veterans’ Hospital, Spectrum News 13 reports. The patient recently traveled abroad. They are only experiencing mild symptoms.
Another case was detected in St. Lucie County on Monday. Contact tracing is underway, Tampa Bay Times reports.
Omicron continues to be studied. Current reports suggest it is more contagious than previous variants but not any more severe.
