Disney Responds to Statement from Human Rights Campaign Regarding Rejected Donation

The Walt Disney Company has responded to the statement from the Human Rights Campaign refusing donations from them.

Yesterday, Disney CEO Bob Chapek finally denounced the “Don’t Say Gay” bill after it passed the Florida senate. Chapek said that Disney joined a statement from the Human Rights Campaign (HRC) and Freedom for All Americans opposing anti-LGBTQ+ state legislation and pledged donations to LGBTQ+ organizations including HRC.

The Human Rights Campaign responded with a statement. Joni Madison, Interim President of the Human Rights Campaign, said, “The Human Rights Campaign will not accept this money from Disney until we see them build on their public commitment and work with LGBTQ+ advocates to ensure that dangerous proposals, like Florida’s Don’t Say Gay or Trans bill, don’t become dangerous laws, and if they do, to work to get them off the books.”

Disney has now responded, saying, “We signed the HRC’s national business statement opposing anti-LGBTQ+ legislation and pledged to financially support their efforts, and while we are surprised and disappointed that they will not take our financial support at this time, we remain committed to meaningful action to combat legislation targeting the LGBTQ+ community.”
